About the IRLE Library
The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment Library (IRLEL) is an Affiliated Library of the UC Berkeley campus. It serves faculty, staff, students, members of the Institute for research on Labor and Employment (formerly the Institute of Industrial Relations), other researchers in the UC system, and the general public. Outreach services are of special import.
HOW TO ENTER THE LIBRARY DURING LIBRARY STAFF WORKING HOURS
Please use the intercom system on the right side of the front door at 2521 Channing Way. All IRLE people, programs and units are listed in the directory.
- To scroll up through the listings use the ∗ key. To scroll down through the listings use the # key.
- Find “Library” in the listings and press the start button under the keypad and enter the 2 digit code.
The phone will ring in the library, if no one answers and it goes to voicemail, please hang up and try again in a few minutes.
Please look at IRLE front door on the left to see if any special Library hours are posted if you do not get a library staff member.
You may also make an appointment for reference help or to check out a book by calling 510-642-1705 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
You do not need to make an appointment during library hours.
HOW TO BORROW LIBRARY MATERIAL
- Please search Oskicat to see if IRLE has a copy of the material
- Please note the title of the book and the call number
- Contact by phone 510-642-1705 or email email@example.com with the title and call number. You may also visit in person without pre-checking for item availability.
- Once the material is located you will receive a phone call or email back to arrange pick up of material at the circulation desk in the IRLE library.
(The IRLE Library is not barcoded and all of our material says “Available” in Oskicat.)
Due to Library items being in the basement, there may be a delay in retrieving items especially with in-person requests.
- Monday-Thursday: 9:00am-12:00pm, 1:00pm-5:00pm
- Friday: 9:00am-12:00pm, 1:00pm-4:00pm
The IRLE Library’s holdings are listed in OskiCat, UC Bekeley’s main library catalog.
NOTE: The IRLE Library does not use Auto-Circulation, and so OskiCat screens will not reflect whether a book is checked out or not.
Melvyl is the UC System-wide catalog, with over 30 million records. Melvyl also reflects the holdings of many member libraries beyond the UC System.Other Library Catalogs
The Library conducts training sessions and offers research support for its key on-campus constituencies and also for the Labor Movement. It maintains strong links with community groups, and staff consult widely with academics and citizen-researchers interested in labor issues, labor economics, and organization studies.> Go to Research Support and Reference Page
The Library's print collections number in excess of 45,000 volumes, and are housed at the IRLE, UC Berkeley. Sections of the collection are stored at the Northern Regional Library Facility. Collections are catalogued in UC Berkeley's Library Pathfinder and in the California Digital Library.
In addition to offering reference service and print collections, the Library also manages the Web publishing efforts of the IRLE units. As part of that mission, the Library prepares digital versions of working papers, digital labor art and other Web-based resources.> Go to Collections
