"Scraping By: Income and Program Participation After the Loss of Extended Unemployment Benefits," by Jesse Rothstein and Robert G. Valletta, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management 36 (4), Fall 2017, p.p. 880-908. Replication readme December 2017 This readme file corresponds to the replication materials for the above paper. Materials are distributed as a single zip file. The file contains the following item groups: (1) the original SIPP data pulls and extract construction, in the Stata files with program/log name “UIexh_sipp. . .” and data file name “UIexh_spousew. . .” (2) the program/log and data files (“evenstudysample. . .”) that set up the data for most of the specific analyses that are performed in the paper. (3) a few auxiliary data sets that are used in the initial merge or for some descriptive results (e.g., the UI availability data set, “eui_state_08-14.dta,” which is used for Figures 1 and 2 in the paper). (4) Programs and log files for each of the tables and figures in the paper. Note that the tableA3 and tableA4 programs are actually the two tables from Appendix B, and the results for Tables 1 and 2 are generated by the “UIexh_NEdescriptives” files (with some transformations done in the “tables_revised” spreadsheet). Some of the final programs use the “eventstudy” data from 6-16, whereas others use the version from 3-17 (which is distributed with the archive). This is inconsequential. Both versions have all 16 waves of the 2008 SIPP panel; however, the 3-17 version added some variables (e.g., wealth) that are needed for some of the specific displays.
